What is included in the program?

Personal attention from the start! We individualize each patient’s weight loss program based on their unique needs.  To determine this, your first visit will begin with an in-depth patient evaluation including a thorough past medical history, complete physical exam, an EKG and all necessary lab work.

Treatments include nutritional, behavioral, and psychological support as well as medications and supplements to accomplish safe and effective weight  loss.

At your follow up, the lab results will be reviewed with you. Then we create a personalized program, based on mutually decided goals, to help you lose weight, and most importantly, keep it off.

Our medically supervised weight loss program is directed by Bariatrician Dr. Catherine Drourr.  She is a board-certified internal medicine physician with extensive education in the medical treatment of adult obesity and its associated conditions.

Will my insurance cover the cost of the plan?

We accept Medicare, however at this time we do not bill other health care plans. We will be happy to provide you with the proper documentation paperwork to submit claims to your insurance company. Also, most people can use their Flexible Spending or Health Savings Account for these services. In addition, your treatment costs may be tax deductible.

Also, check with your employer about assistance with cost, some employers are now offering incentives to lead a healthier lifestyle.

What kind of diet plans do you offer?

Either all food- all supplement- or a bit of both!!   Dr. Drourr works with many diets because in many cases the decision as to which plan is implemented is dependent on many variables including diabetes, high cholesterol, lifestyle and time constraints for others, and patient preferences for organic or vegetarian diets. Dr. Drourr is trained to determine and uniquely tailor your nutritional needs.

We also offer a variety of delicious meal replacement protein shakes and supplements in our office to help you reach your goals. They are also highly portable and convenient for lifestyles that require often fast and easy to prepare food choices.

How effective is your program? How many pounds can I expect to lose? How long will it take to get to my goal weight?

Our goal is for steady, progressive weight loss that can be sustained. Typical rates of loss are an average of 2 to 5 pounds weekly until you reach your goal weight.

Dr. Drourr is committed to follow the Bariatric Practice Guidelines that outline four medical (non-surgical) body fat reduction/weight loss methods: dietary modification, exercise prescription, behavior modification and when appropriate, medication.

How well you do depends to a great extent on how closely you follow the plan you are given. We will calculate a theoretical maximum weekly rate of weight loss you can expect during your initial assessment visit.

What are the health effects of being obese?

Obesity is one of the leading causes of preventable death in the United States. Dr. Drourr sees obesity as a major treatable underlying factor in many chronic medical conditions. The good news is that by losing weight, you can improve, prevent or lower your risk for these weight-related health conditions:

  • Premature death
  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Stroke
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Asthma
  • High blood pressure
  • Sleep apnea
  • Arthritis
  • Gallbladder disease

In addition, studies have shown that obesity reduces life expectancy (premature mortality) and increases disability. Overweight people have a shorter lifespan.

Are there any drugs or appetite suppressants used in your program?

Dr Drourr often prescribes medications for patients for whom they are medically indicated. The decision to use medications is based on the patient’s needs, current medications and current medical problems.

What if I am not obese and want to only lose a few pounds?

Our weight loss programs are not simply for people who are extremely overweight, but are for anyone who is unhappy or feels unhealthy due to their weight. We will advise you if you shouldn’t, or don’t need to lose weight, or if you are not the right candidate for one of our weight loss programs for any reason. Our only goal is your overall health!

How often do I need to come in for office visits?

The initial visit will be followed by weekly visits with the practitioner for at least your first month and then visits every 2-4 weeks until you reach your weight loss goal.  Once on maintenance our patients come in every month to every 3 months for life! (this is a lifelong plan).

How will I keep my weight off once I reach my goal weight?

Despite the name, a maintenance program is not just a way to maintain weight loss. Maintenance programs are designed to continue the excellent work that you started during the active weight loss phase of your program and teach you new and different ways for improving your lifestyle and your health.

Our weight loss program includes a sensible maintenance component that gives you the tools and information to maintain your healthy new weight for a lifetime.

Once you achieve your goal weight you will then progress into our maintenance program where you will continue to receive support while practicing additional strategies for successful long term management. Research shows that participation in a maintenance program after initial weight loss is linked with success in keeping the weight off.

We also offer a lifetime program after two years of achieved goal weight. This is one of the features that sets Medical Weight Loss of Jupiter’s medical program apart from less effective weight loss programs.
